On Thanksgiving Day, PCCO volunteers prepared and distributed individually-packaged Thanksgiving meals (including dessert) . Diane Sager of Our Lady of Consolation and Pat Softchin of Penningtonville Presbyterian Church coordinated this annual event. In the beginning of November, they collected donations of plates, glasses, utensils, turkeys and canned vegetables. Twenty turkeys were cooked, carved and frozen and 50 pies were baked and donated by volunteers in advance. Then, on Thanksgiving morning, approximately 100 volunteers arrived at the Schneider Parish Center (SPC) to cook, package and deliver 179 Thanksgiving meals to local residents. Each meal also included a card or drawing created by children from Highland Baptist and Our Lady of Consolation Churches.
Anyone who has prepared a large Thanksgiving meal can appreciate the logistics that were necessary to make it happen. (It isn’t easy to package turkey, potatoes, stuffing, applesauce, vegetables, biscuits with butter, cranberry sauce and pie and then deliver them.) Not only did Diane and Pat make the giveaway happen without any problems, there was a definitely a holiday atmosphere at the SPC. Many of the volunteers said they expected to participate again next year.
